Description

Here is a really interesting instrument! The very ornate markings on the bell identify it as being sold by Georgi & Vitak of Chicago somewhere between 1906 and 1919, as this was the window when they were located on Gross Ave, which is also on the bell. This store says they were the sole agents for the U.S. and Canada. The instrument itself was probably produced in Czechoslovakia by V.F. Cerveny & Fils. This baritone features their 1873 patented Walzenventile or “roller valves”. This roller valve mechanism is basically rotary valves that have been rotated 90 degrees from their typical position. This was done to simplify the mechanism, by increasing the mechanical advantage of the lever system. The 1973 patent also covered the spring tension adjusting screws, seen in this example as well. This mechanism was an extra cost option on their higher grade of instruments. This baritone plays very well. It has some silver plating worn off at the normal high wear sections but is in remarkable cosmetic shape for its age! It has been professionally serviced and has a beautiful tone. Any lover of that vintage sound that only a vintage instrument can get will love this horn. Collectors should be looking, as well!
